TimberGEN · Procedural tree generation

TimberGEN is my procedural tree generation system for Unity. A hierarchy of trunk, branch and leaf generators defines the structure, while custom curves and non-destructive modifiers control how it develops. The live visual editor keeps those relationships accessible, so changing the silhouette does not mean starting the tree again. The tool also handles the steps needed to use the result in a real-time project: automatic LODs, billboard baking, collision building and FBX export, with included HDRP and URP shaders. The images in this section come from the Unity Asset Store listing and cover the generator workflow, tree variations and root-to-ground blending studies.

Process

Build a generator hierarchy

Trunks, branches and leaves are generated as related parts, with an optional imported root-flare mesh. Curves shape their development along the hierarchy, making it possible to vary the tree while retaining an editable construction.

Refine without rebuilding

Non-destructive modifiers refine the generated form in the same editor window. Parameters and curves stay available throughout the process, from the overall branching pattern to the final shape. The store images also document work on making the tree base sit naturally against the ground.

Technical breakdown

Prepare the tree for real-time use

Automatic LOD generation reduces detail for distance, the billboard baker provides a distant representation, and collision building prepares interaction geometry. These are part of the asset workflow rather than separate manual modelling steps.

Use in Unity or export

The included shaders support HDRP and URP projects. FBX export makes the generated geometry available to other projects and tools, while the generator setup remains editable in TimberGEN.
