Environments

Building a world that holds together

These environments bring terrain, vegetation, atmosphere and water together in Founder Engine. I work from the large relationships—landform, scale, light and a route through the scene—towards the material and geometry detail needed at ground level. Roads and rivers are part of the authoring workflow, so their shape can be edited alongside the landscape rather than treated as finished decoration. The difficult part is keeping all those systems consistent as the scene changes. A forest asks different questions from a portrait: dense cutout foliage, texture residency, geometry budgets and ray-tracing structures all affect the result. The process images include wireframes, incomplete materials and comparisons because they help explain where an apparently visual problem actually came from.

Forest integration · light and ground contact

Tree scatter, rocks and ground materials share a path-traced lighting setup. Low sun exposes contact shadows and the transition from detailed ground to distant canopy.

Process

Read the landscape at two scales

Wide views let me judge the terrain silhouette, tree distribution and atmospheric depth. At ground level, the same scene depends on roots, rocks, road edges and material transitions. I move between those views while adjusting slope and height masks, scatter settings and lighting, so close detail supports the composition instead of competing with it.

Find the cause before adding detail

A smooth or broken patch can come from a material mask, a stale binding, geometry selection or reconstruction. One terrain investigation initially looked like a detail-budget problem, but uncovered slope ranges also contributed. Increasing geometry could not restore displacement where the material mask requested none. Those distinctions guide both the fixes and the diagnostic tools.

Technical breakdown

One scene, several rendering paths

The DirectX 12 renderer supports path-traced, hybrid RTX and raster PBR modes. Flecs scene data and the Qt editor provide the common authoring layer for imported assets, components and saved scenes. Terrain, vegetation and water use that workflow, including persistent edits and runtime updates.

Keep iteration practical

Geometry generation, acceleration-structure updates and texture loading can interrupt editing long before a scene runs out of GPU time. I use CPU, GPU and memory diagnostics to locate that work and move suitable preparation into the background. The gallery records visual development across different scenes and settings; its frame counters are session context rather than comparable benchmarks.

My work covers world assembly, rendering integration, procedural systems and editor tools. Imported meshes and textures retain their original authorship.
